There are traces of Gonzo journalism in Rachel Mason’s work. The Brooklyn-based artist recently chronicled the visual rhetoric employed by the main players in the 2008 primaries. Produced while she was following John Edwards and other Democratic candidates on the campaign trail, her quick-drawn sketches and hand sculptures later coalesced in “The Candidate.” The solo show ran in her native Los Angeles’ Circus Gallery this past winter. Mason—who is also a musician and writer—finds no shortage of inspiration in the aesthetics of politics.
