Ezra Furman, the 20-year-old songwriter—still a student at Tufts University—shrieks, squeals and wails his way through angsty metaphors and bizarre notions such as Moses braiding his hair into cornrows or God as a terribly lonely, middle-aged woman. After self-releasing his first disc, Beat Beat Beat, in 2006, Ezra (with fellow nerdlingers, the Harpoons) signed with Minty Fresh Records and kicked out their label debut, Banging Down the Doors, last year. Since then, Furman has kept a low profile, unsuccessfully trying to keep reviewers from wetting themselves in delight.
