In 2006, 33-year-old Belarusian transplant Gary Vaynerchuk made a splash in barrels worldwide, taking wine criticism to the wilds of online media. His daily video podcast, “Wine Library TV,” pioneered an extreme and irreverent approach to wine tasting. Since then, he’s been dubbed the Hunter S. Thompson of wine criticism and, like the Gonzo journalist, he’s ruffled a few feathers. But it’s a small price to pay for a viewer base of blossoming wine enthusiasts under 40. His book, Gary Vaynerchuk’s 101 Wines was published in May.
