When you think about the intersection of religion and politics in American life today, certain words come to mind. Words like “evildoers” and “creation science.” Our president’s particular brand of extremist Christianity is a major ideological underpinning of American foreign policy—sometimes overtly, as when Bush referred to the fight against terrorism as a “crusade.”
Indeed, the right wing often seems to have the lock on the religion-politics connection. But a new group called Faithful America wants that to change—and its actions show both the potential and the pitfalls of mobilizing within and across religious communities for progressive causes.
