Heeb

Anyone prove they love Israel by showing up to the Israel Day Parade on a sunny summer day. But several thousand of us who really, really love the Jewish state were out in force on Sunday on 42nd Street, showing our support for Israel in its time of trouble. There were Gay supporters of Israel, homophobic supporters of Israel, Jewish, Italian, Irish and South Asian supporters of Israel, and one really irate Chinese-American supporter of Israel who wore orange in solidarity with the settlers kicked out of Gush Katif (if Fred Tang wants to run for office, he could probably win a seat in the Knesset). All in all, a grand rally.

The counterprotesters were in short supply (even Neturei Karta could barely muster a minyan), the fanatical far right didn’t hijack the event (speakers were actually able to place the words "Palestinian" and "state" together without being booed), and there were enough non-Jewish speakers to make things lively (we have found that when Jews speak at these things, the speeches are fairly mad-libby, the same words—"never again," "six million," "war on terror," "Israel loves peace" etc.— just rearranged in different order). Alas, time constraints prevented Jewdar from producing our "Heeb Humorists Who Hate Hamas" sign, but the guy pictured above seemed more or less to express our desires even without the alliteration and haircut.
