After William Safire and Irving Kristol died, Jewdar thought that, according to the Law of Threes, Norman Podhoretz should start making his will. Well, Jewdar was right about the Law of Threes, the triumvirate wasn’t of Jewish Neocons, but rather, of Jews who had a major impact on American culture—Soupy Sales, has died.
Born Milton Supman in the Jewish ghetto of Franklinton, North Carolina, after service in the Navy during the war, Sales rose to prominence as a radio DJ until he got his big break in local TV in Cincinatti, eventually getting a nationally syndicated kids show, Lunch with Soupy Sales. Aside from the frequent pie throwing, his most infamous schtick was one day telling kids to go into their parents wallets and send him the little pieces of green paper. Even after the show was cancelled, Sales remained a ubiquitious presence on TV, particularly on the game show circuit. While work had fallen off in the 90’s, Sales will always be a seminal figure in TV history, representing that first generation of performers and creators who, without any classes or models to guide them, made the medium.
