Wink Wink Nudge Nudge
Today Chicago Tribune entertainment reporter Mark Caro wags his finger at Gawker’s recent post about whether or not Israeli bookstores will open on the Saturday of new Harry Potter‘s release. Says Caro:
And what crowd are you playing to, friend? This one?
P.S. Can I get my own photoshopped clip art icon for my blogs? It’s super rad. Oops, I forgot to use quotation marks.
I suspect the Gawker folks would say they’re being postmodern and ironic. They’re playing to a crowd that appreciates such wink-wink references (the comments include several inside jokes about Jewish law and nary a complaint). There’s already a popular Jewish magazine called Heeb, so why not embrace all slurs and stereotypes? Don’t take offense; it’s all in quotation marks.

Round two: Gawker steps it up.

As a Jew and a regular reader of Gawker, I actually did get offended by their original post about sales of Harry Potter in Israel. Of course, their comment section is only open to people they approve of, so all you’ll find there today are a bunch of people agreeing with each other. Basically Gawker has a few Jewish employees, so they think they are “allowed” to make these kinds of jokes. That’s debatable. What annoys me more is when they make totally ignorant comments about Israeli society. And Gawker tends to do that a lot. Yes, there are stores that are closed on Shabbat, but there are also plenty of stores that are open. It has nothing to do with Harry Potter.

Round three: Gawker apologizes to Jew.
I’m glad that they understood that we understood the joke. And I’m glad that they, unlike one of their commenters, understand that our commenters speak for themselves, not for us.

oh, and since i don’t have commenter privileges on gawker, i’ll respond here: good job guys, you managed to be even more offensive in your response post than in the original one! you really deserve a pat on the back for adding to the hate-fest that is the blogosphere.
