Last Friday, the NY Times covered various quirky adaptations to modern life in Israel’s Orthodox community. One notable example is a religiously approved cell phone. What does it offer? Well, mostly restrictions. The phones can’t connect to the Internet, send text messages or take photos, plus “More than 10,000 numbers for phone sex, dating services and the like are blocked, and rabbinical overseers ensure that the lists are up to date.”
But the plan is super cheap! That is, unless you make a call on a Saturday. “Calls to other kosher phones are less than 2 cents a minute, compared with 9.5 cents for normal phones. But on the Sabbath any call costs $2.44 a minute, a steep religious penalty.”

In that same article, the ultra-Orthodox banned a picture of the Statue of Liberty because they are against liberty and freedom.
I would like to hear if Jewdar has any thoughts about this.
