Around this time of the year, kitchen cretins like yours truly tend to whip up latkes from the same old recipe, but a wealth of alternatives to the standard fried potato with apple sauce are increasingly accessible. This week, Chow Magazine’s potato-turnip duck fat latke and New York Magazine’s south-of-the border take serve up two innovative alternatives. Of course, for those of us bound to botch these recipes, it can’t hurt to prepare plenty of hooch for your dinner guests.

These do sound amazing…...though far removed from our collective latke memories. Do you remember the Hebrew School party (hockey puckesque ) defrosted frozen latke??
