Our Passover

The blogosphere is on fire with Passover stories and new spins on the seder. Chow posted a Southern Seder menu, the Daily Green did a Sustainable Passover story with help from the folks at The Jew and The Carrot, which did its own round-up of Passover stories and seder ideas, we’re doing our first Slow Food Seder, and of course the evangelical Christians are deep into preparations for their Passover meal. You read right. Evangelicals in Huntsville, Alabama, are gearing up for a huge 1300-seat seder called "Christ Our Passover".

Robert Somerville, director of the Huntsville-based Awareness Ministry, has been hosting Passover meals for twenty years, during which time he has attracted guests from some twenty-odd other evangelical organizations. Somerville explains his Christian Passover, with a ‘We Are the World’ statement, "I don’t care if you are white bread, wheat bread or bagel; we are one people and together.”

And this year the Passover will generate $10,000 in funds for the local Jewish Federation. But some Huntsville Jews aren’t too keen on the idea, donations or not. Huntsville rabbi Jeffrey Ballon essentially told the evangelicals to get their own holiday. And seriously folks, doesn’t Christianity already have its own version of Passover? It’s called Easter, and just because it’s been turned into an egg hunt and stuffed bunny holiday doesn’t mean pastor Somerville can just hop on the Passover train and claim it for Jesus.

It all seems to be part of a larger trend in the Evangelical movement to embrace Judaism and Israel as a thin veil for hating on Muslims. Thanks guys, the Israel vs. the Muslim world debate really needed more wackos.

Thanks for the linky-love! We linked to your Slow Food Seder – and if I wasn’t bound for the lovely land of Silver Spring, Maryland for Passover, I would be there!
