This month, beloved Heeb Storytelling accordionist Adam Shenkman will finally become a man. That’s right, the 27-year-old Shenkman will be celebrating his coming of age with a very special edition of his monthly comedy show, titled "Adam’s Bar Mitzvah," at Echo Park Film Center in Los Angeles. The Adam Shenkman Special is a unique comedy performance that is structured like a live TV taping, complete with commercial breaks, video clips and audience participation (which means you should probably sit in the back). Celebrate the Jewish New Year with a free performance by The Sway Machinery, America’s only indie rock Jewish cantorial band, which includes performers Jeremiah Lockwood (Balkan Beat Box), John Bollinger (Barbez), Matt Bauder, Kelly Pratt (Beirut and Arcade Fire) and Colin Stetson (Arcade Fire). The concert also includes storytelling and a selection of animated films. And justify your absence at work the next day at an open bar reception (featuring wines from Wente Vineyards) prior to the concert at 8:00 p.m. in the courtyard of the Temple.

Curated by Mirman, and featuring the biggest, most respected names in alternative comedy—including Heeb favorites such as Michael Showalter, Kristen Schaal and Hannibal Buress—the festival is sure to provide the kind of comic relief the end of the summer requires. Last year’s festivities included an awards ceremony with honors such as "Best Twin in a Twin Performing Ensemble,” so expect the unexpected during this four-day romp through various Brooklyn venues.
