Almost 20 years after Son in Law, Pauly Shore has reemerged into the public eye, albeit thorough the lens of the Internet — webnoxiously promoting himself via multiple social networks. And, though the world has changed tremendously since the Weasel made sense to pop culture, Pauly seems unscathed by his hiatus from the big screen.
The media world has completely changed since you were last in the public eye. Have you adapted to the change, or is Encino Man suddenly too close to home for you?
Nah. I mean, I may have not been accessible to the public for awhile, but I haven’t exactly been stuck in a block of ice. My audience has been smaller, but I’ve been around and alive. I once asked John Travolta what he did before his big return with Pulp Fiction. He said, and, I think, wisely, ‘If they took movies away from Robin Williams, do you think he’d stop being Robin Williams?’ So, just because they took the camera away from me, didn’t mean I stopped doing me.
“Doing you” seems to be the thing that you’re most up to these days. Why are you going all meta all of a sudden?
In a way, it’s always been my act. I’ve always played a heightened version of myself. I just do it on the Internet now instead of television.
Your new mockumentary, Adopted, pokes fun at Hollywood’s penchant for adopting African kids. In the film you are a bachelor dickhead. How much of this character is the real you?
Well, I’m Jewish and the son of Mitzie Shore, obviously a powerful woman in the comedy scene. so at both levels she controls me, which means I’m kind of perpetually single.
She doesn’t want grandchildren?
Definitely not. My mom never supported comedians in relationships. She feels women occupy time and creativity gets wasted spending time on picking out flowers and worrying about abortions and crap like that.
With your mom playing a big role in your life, doesn’t that kind of thwart your creativity?
Yeah, but I think what’s really going on here is that my mom wants to be my girlfriend. She just turned 80, so at least I don’t have to worry about getting her pregnant.
Speaking of unwanted pregnancy, I hear Adopted is available at Walmart?
That’s right, you can pick up a man-made lake, some manure, a 19-pack of RC Cola and a copy of the Adopted DVD all in one visit — totally magical. But don’t tell the Waltons I’m Jewish, or the pallet full of unsold copies will be on the next freight plane to Israel.
